Maize Advanced Agro Refinery, or “MAAR”, was set up to manufacture maize (corn) starch and maize by-products using the wet milling process. Its factory is located in Habiganj, while the head office is in Dhaka.

Industries & Applications

Textile Industry

Maize starch is commonly used in the textile industry because it provides stiffness and adds weight to cloth. It is used in sizing to strengthen warp yarn, in printing to increase the consistency of printing pastes, and in finishing applications such as glaze, polish and sizing to change the appearance of fabric after bleaching, dyeing or printing.

Food & Beverage Industry

Maize starch is important in food applications because its viscosity, opacity and binding capacity can improve food texture, thickness and taste. It can help form gels, act as a suspension stabilizer and serve as a bodying agent in baking.

Paper Industry

Maize starch is used in the paper industry as a surface-sizing agent, binder and coating agent to increase paper tensile strength. In size-press applications, it can improve paper appearance, reduce excessive ink penetration and create a hard, firm surface for writing or printing. It can also help paper tolerate erasing without excessive surface wear.

Packaging Industry

Maize starch is used as an adhesive or gum to strengthen paper and corrugated boards in the packaging industry.

Pharmaceutical Industry

Pure pharmaceutical starches can be used for binding, carrying, disintegrating, thickening and coating in various applications. The brochure states that maize starch can be used as a binder in cough syrups and as a binder and filler for tablets and capsules. It also notes its use in soft and silky talcum powder.

Other Industries
